Lesson #5 – Interrogatories/Discovery Questions. At the beginning of the divorce process, this is a standard “you ask me and I ask you” set of questions to anything and everything you want to know or be known about the other person. The purpose of the questions can range from the division of assets, to social/personal history, to discovery of facts. There are standard questions that your attorney will want to know. You can also add and ask anything you want to know. Use this process wisely! The answers to these are as if you are under oath. They can be referenced in depositions and court if needed. Talk through these with your attorney and ask for recommendations. A good attorney will help guide you through this. You will have a certain time frame to complete these and return them. One suggestion, meet with your counselor before reading the responses and after. Information is powerful and also can be surprising and shocking. I highly recommend anyone going through a divorce have a counselor who can help them process through each step. Information is so powerful and also can be very revealing. That’s probably a lesson on it’s own!
