Lesson #6 – Counseling and therapy; A good therapist is worth their weight in gold. On a hot day in 2017 when I made an unexpected discovery, I went straight to counseling. Since then, my therapist has been with me each step of the way. Therapists can help from listening to guiding. There are times I would sit and cry and other times I would ask questions trying to solicit advice. Depending on the type of therapy (cognitive, behavior, humanistic or integrative) it directs the course of your sessions. There is also EMDR therapy which can help you work through trauma and triggers. I didn’t realize how many triggers I had from things I had been told, discovered and learned about before and through the divorce. Working through those not only helped me overcome them but also helped me move forward. Staying stuck in the trauma and replaying a reel over and over in your mind is not only devastating but destructive. If you want to incorporate your faith in sessions, there are many counselors who will do that as well.
Life is going to happen to each of us. We all need space and time to process and work through the twists and turns. In the moment, it’s hard to see an end to the circumstance or way forward. We can get tangled up in all we can’t see. Having an outside view from someone who isn’t close to the situation can help bring perspective and clarity to that moment or event. A counselor can help you process and navigate. Stay grounded in your faith, close to your family and allow a small circle of friends into your life. We are not meant to weather storms in silos.
