Lesson #7 – CPA: Certified Public Accountant. Someone who knows the in’s and out’s of taxes and government requirements for filing taxes. Depending on what kind of job you have (or if you have multiple), what assets, retirement, donations, etc, will determine how complex or work tax season might be for you. There are an abundance of services online you can use as well as the old paper long forms. One popular software called Turbo Tax is very recognizable. It’s sold in all the major retail stores and many people use it with great success. It’s easy, simple and quick! I remember my daddy filling out the long paper forms when I was young so it wasn’t a thought that using a CPA would be needed. I mean, why pay for something you can do yourself, right? My dad learned the value of having a CPA as he got older though, and so did I.

There are two professionals God put in my life that I knew I needed to consult with. One was my financial planner and the other was a CPA. I already used one and knew the other. I chose to lean into them because I knew I needed someone I could trust and who knew more in these areas than I did. I knew my limitations and knew there was value in surrounding yourself with people who not only have your best interest at heart but have expertise in these areas. When you are going through a divorce, the emotional journey is heavy enough without having to worry about if you are doing your taxes correctly for the first time by yourself. Could I have done it myself, yes. But if you are in complicated divorce or one that’s not over, I would highly recommend using a CPA. Having an outside professional who knows the laws, I felt, was essential. The peace you can gain from that weight being lifted is also priceless.

How do you find one? Ask. Ask your family and friends. As your co-workers and church community. Recommendations are the best reviews. They are not hard to find!
